When we first began our home search in Pittsburgh we referred to our prospective home as "The Silver Tuna". Now, most of you will quickly recognize the reference from one of our generations most beloved Christmas classics, Home Alone. There is nothing like seeing flannel-pajama clad Kevin McCallister sprawled out in his parent's charming four post bed with the red and green wallpaper gleaming in the background to give you the holiday spirit. Take that feeling up a notch when you watch Kevin overstay his welcome at the nostalgic Plaza Hotel in the sequel, Lost in New York. The red textiles and rich mahogany furniture inspired our primary bedroom suite.
We ordered many samples of different red and cream wallpaper patterns. Equally inspired were we by Diane Keaton's character's home in The Family Stone with it's iconic Waverly rust and cream wallpaper. However, we chose a classic burgundy and cream striped print from Latitude Run. It was a bold choice we knew could only go in our bedroom. Although simple in its design, it can feel busy and possibly overwhelming for a more neutral and muted wallpaper enthusiast. We recommend that our clients try a stripe in a hallway or powder room to make sure they like the aesthetic before committing to a larger more lived-in space.
We have fallen in love with the burgundy stripe and feel like we are in a classic 90's New York City hotel every time we climb into bed for a long winter's nap. We combined the striped paper with rich wood antiques including a gorgeous petite china cabinet that we use for specialty towels and hand-made soaps. We installed milk glass sconces to flank the bed to light our night-time reading. Lastly, we sourced a spectacular wingback chair with burgundy and gold fabric and carved walnut to lounge in while enjoying our morning coffee.
