Neoclassical Design Meets a Muted Floral

In 2023 we had the pleasure of redesigned a commercial space in Portland, Maine that no longer felt in alignment with the maturity and sophistication of the Balayage Portland clientele. The existing space was colorful and childlike, so we knew we needed to tone the color palette down without it becoming bland or cold. This was a challenge because Balayage Portland is housed in a beautiful old Federal Style building with twelve foot ceilings and cavernous rooms. To encapsulate the space we knew we needed to cloak the walls in warm, muted, texture. We chose a rich cream limewash to accompany a textured tropical print by Bay Isle Home.

After installing the wallpaper on the exterior walls we sourced a soulful mahogany sideboard, two gorgeous curved wishbone Lulu and George Celeste accent chairs and a post-modern tessellated stone coffee table. Inspired by designer Kelly Wearstler, we mixed textured neutrals, modern art and accessories in natural materials with unique silhouettes alongside storied antiques. This kept the space from feeling sterile or contrived. Instead it felt like an inviting, collected and luxurious sanctuary just steps off the cold cobblestone and brick streets of Portland, Maine.
